Can a hero have several companions, and can companions be traded?
The rulebook says you may give and take companions and that a completed quest's companion joins that hero.

Yes to both. A companion can be traded like warriors, spirit and items (heroes on the same space), and the hero who completes a companion quest gains that companion. A companion's ability works only for the hero who holds it.
