Can I take a corruption instead of resolving a battle card's effect?
The designer said you can never opt for a corruption to avoid an effect.

No. You must resolve every battle card. A corruption comes only from not having enough to pay, never as a way to skip an effect. A card with 'gain a corruption' cannot be failed.
