How many battle cards must I resolve to defeat the adversary, and does progress carry over?

You must resolve five cards in a single battle. If you retreat, only the improvements you made with Advantages stay on the cards; each new fight deals five random cards from its deck, and an improved card may or may not come up again. Hero progress does not carry over otherwise, and the cards you already beat are not removed.
