How do the preset first-game hands work with 2 players?

Give each player a preset hand and its matching mage. Then either shuffle the unused preset hands in with the rest of the artifacts, or set them aside and build the decks from the remaining cards. Both are valid. Leaving hands 3 and 4 out gives a more varied card pool.
