Do I apply penalties before gains when scoring an epoch?
The rulebook just says scores are calculated and then applied; posters agree on a net total.

Work out the net total for the epoch, then add it to your running score, which cannot go below zero. Order within the epoch does not matter. A few players count gains first if the net would go negative, but players generally apply the net total and the rulebook has no such step.
