When I play a 0, is the 0 itself taken into my collection?
The rulebook says the played card is ignored when counting, and several players read it the same way.

No. The card you just played is never counted among the cards that can leave, so a played 0 stays in the parade. What the 0 does is put every other card in the parade into removal mode, so all the cards of its colour and all 0s leave.
