How do hatchways and tunnels work in PEARL?

A hatchway acts as a wall until unlocked by discarding City cards whose keypad numbers total enough (10 or more). That puts a tunnel sticker beside it, and moving through a tunnel afterwards costs one action and requires revealing any one City card. You need a hatchway in your own room, but not a view of the other side.
