What if I cannot cover all the armor boxes?
The designer pointed to skills as the way out.

You are stuck with the consequences of every box you could not cover, because the other boxes are locked. You still claim the card as loot if you survive, unless the card says otherwise (the Beetle does). Skills or potions that add, reroll or raise dice are how to avoid this.
