In solo play, how does the -5 roll modifier work, and can the result go below 1?

After a no-purchase roll (16-19) or a market refresh on a 20, subtract 5 from the next roll. A result below 1 becomes position 1, as the lowest value is 1, and there cannot be two consecutive no-purchase rolls. Roll the d20 after your turn even if you passed, because shopping is still the last step.
