Can Med Lab take a defeated ally that was defeated by damage from its own attack?

Yes. If the consequential damage from an ally's attack or thwart is what defeats it, you can exhaust Med Lab to put the ally there. In alter-ego form you can later play it from Med Lab, and it comes in exhausted.
