You pay only Sneak Attack's cost, and the ally returns to hand at the end of the phase it was put into play (not the end of the round). It can be used in that phase: play Sneak Attack in the quest phase to commit it for willpower, or in the combat phase to let it defend. It returns with no damage on it.
