When are shadow cards dealt and discarded?
The rulebook describes dealing and discarding shadow cards in the combat phase.

One face-down shadow card is dealt to each engaged enemy at the start of the combat phase, highest engagement cost first. They stay until the end of the combat phase, when all are discarded, or earlier if the enemy leaves play. A new set is dealt next round; nothing carries over. If the encounter deck is empty, remaining enemies get none.
