Do I need an earlier card with the class icon before using a class ability?
The rulebook says you can only use a Class ability if you have already played another card of that class earlier in the turn.

Yes. A class or crew ability works only if you already played another card of that class (or crew) earlier in the turn. The first card with the icon gets no bonus, and a card cannot trigger itself. The trigger does not have to be played immediately before it, and later cards cannot help earlier ones.
