The first player to build a non-wooden ship (iron, steel or luxury liner) at a given Wharf must also place 1 brick from their own supply on it. The Wharf then stays modernized for the rest of the game for all players; you need not own it, and each of the two Wharves is modernized separately. Building wooden ships never needs modernization.
