A newly named survivor starts with 1 survival; story-event survivors with no stated amount start at 0 and gain 1 when named. The settlement's survival limit caps what every survivor can hold: it starts at 1 and the Language innovation raises it to 2. Survival is kept between showdowns until spent. Gains and losses on departure are added together first and the limit is applied to the total. Survival gained over the limit is lost, so raising the limit later does not restore it.
