Can hunt events cause severe injuries or brain trauma?

Only when the event says so. Event damage still reduces armor and insanity and fills the light and heavy injury boxes, but it can't cause severe injuries or brain trauma on its own, so a survivor can't be killed that way. Damage and effects (including bleeding) carry into the showdown. Players also note that nobody is adjacent on the hunt, so effects hitting 'adjacent survivors' do nothing.
