Normally no: a dead survivor's gear returns to settlement storage, only gear with the irreplaceable rule is lost, and if the whole party dies the rest of their gear still returns. Resources the party was carrying are lost on a total party kill. Death Mode is the variant that makes all gear irreplaceable and archives it on death.
