How does a Devoted Union combined attack work, and what if it draws a trap?

Both partners need an activation when it is declared, usually one activating while the other surges. A trap cancels the whole combined attack and cannot be avoided: the partners only choose which of them attempts to wound the trap and counts as the attacker for it.
