A complete colored square formed by two adjacent half-squares is one affinity, and that affinity counts toward every gear item requiring it. A bonus from a piece of gear is gained only once however many affinities you have, and a second identical gear gives no second bonus. Puzzle affinities must be completed on that specific card, and a lone affinity does nothing on its own.
