Do you need to win and keep units alive for the Battle Vulture, and do self-inflicted losses count?

No, you do not need to win or keep units alive: the Battle Vulture gives its VP when at least five units, yours and/or the enemy's, are destroyed in the battle itself. Units destroyed after the battle, such as by the Ta-Seti 5-strength card or Seth's three-unit card, do not count.
