When is the winner checked: at the end of the Day phase?
The designer and publisher both said to finish the whole Day phase first, matching the rulebook.

At the end of a Day phase, after every player has taken their actions and the end-of-day Prayer Points and permanent VP are given. A player who reaches 8 VP (or 10 by choice) then wins, so everyone gets a final chance to overtake.
