Do I get a cube for hiring a Crown family member in solo play?
The designer answered this directly on BGG. The only-candidate case is a player reading, not a ruling.

Yes when you pick the Crown piece instead of your own, avoiding the two-cube nepotism cost, a three-cube swing. If the Crown piece is your only valid candidate there is nothing to choose over, so players read it as no cube, though no designer has said so.
