Must my Merchant end on a different place every turn?
The rulebook requires ending on a different place and the card that skips movement is the only exception.

Yes. You move 1 or 2 places and must end on a different place than you started on, so you cannot loop back to your start or pick up the same Assistant again next turn. Only the card that says not to move your Merchant lets you stay put; the 3-or-4 movement card still needs a different tile.
