On your turn you move either the Merchant or the Companion, never both. The Companion moves one orthogonal step, works alone, so needs and uses no Assistants, and takes that place's action. The Mocha Barrier blocks him like the Merchant, and a card or tile that shows the Merchant does not apply to him; cards showing the Companion token do.
