Is a Family Member sent back when it moves onto my place, or only when I land on it?
Several replies agree, and the rulebook only has catching happen when you reach the place.

Only when a Merchant lands on it. If a Family Member arrives on a tile where a Merchant already stands, that Merchant cannot catch it before moving, and a Family Member sent to a place with an opponent's Merchant is not caught at once. The one exception is a bonus card that keeps your Merchant on the same place, which counts as a move.
