The Fountain is the only place where you need no Assistant and pay no Merchants. Return any number of your Assistants to your Merchant stack, including none, and you may leave some where they are on purpose. You do not leave an Assistant there. It takes your action step, so you cannot keep moving afterwards, and you cannot jump to it from afar: you must reach it with your normal 1-2 place movement.
