When does a played card go to the discard pile, and can it be affected by its own effect?

Only after it has been fully resolved, including any exhaust effects or reshuffles it triggered. That means a card still resolving cannot be found, searched for, or shuffled into a deck its own draw reshuffles; the same card played in an earlier action is already in your discard pile and can be found.
