Can I place a new piece next to one of my opponent's pieces?
The rulebook's Placing section states the rule and its single exception.

No. A newly placed piece may touch only your own colour. The only exception is the second player's very first piece, which must be placed touching the first player's piece. Moved pieces, by contrast, may end up touching your opponent's pieces. A space that touches both colours therefore cannot be used for placing by either player.
