Can a Beetle slide between two stacked pieces, into a hole it cannot slide into, or climb up and down in one move?
The designer ruled on this case in 2008 and again in 2006, and players agree the gate rule applies to Beetles.

No. A Beetle moves either up or down in one move, never both, and it cannot physically slip through a narrow gap between two stacks or slide into a tight space on the same level. To reach such a space it must first climb onto one of the neighbouring pieces and then move down on a later turn. Climbing in from or out to a different level is fine; it is the sideways slide through the gap that is forbidden.
“The Beetle is unable to move directly onto the Black Grasshopper as it cannot physically slip through the gap between the two Black Beetles.”
