Where does a deck-building or bonus card go after you play it?

It goes straight to your personal discard pile and stays in your deck for the rest of the game. There is no separate play area or buffer, and a played objective is the exception (it goes to your objective area). You draw a replacement after performing or forfeiting the effect.
