Must I take a guest before choosing my die, and is taking a guest mandatory?

Taking a guest is optional, but if you want one it must happen before you take a die; once you take a die, you cannot take a guest that turn. Taking a die and carrying out its action is the one part of the turn that is mandatory. You may take at most one guest per turn unless a card says otherwise.
