Can I place a clan marker on a field whose bonus I cannot use?
One report relays a publisher answer; the rulebook only requires the road cost.

You may choose any field you can pay the road cost for; the bonus condition is not checked, so you simply gain nothing if it doesn't apply (for example Oliphant with too few coins).
