Declare the upgrade before rolling dice. The world must have been enemy-held when targeted but may be empty after the strike (the designer called this working as intended). Players add that the placed Marine did not come from an Advance, so it has no retreat path and is destroyed if the ensuing combat is lost, and that Crusade still gives a reinforcement token.
