The rulebook says Assassins kill ONE other meeple and the Red meeples return to the bag.

One meeple, however many Red meeples you picked up. The number only sets how far away the target may be. All the Red meeples go back to the bag, and unused range is simply lost. The Iblis Djinn lets you remove two instead.
