When do I choose between my Ultimate Ability and an Ultimate Die, and do extra saves still pay out?

Choose at the moment you unlock your Ultimate Ability. Taking an Ultimate Die replaces the ability for the rest of the game, even if you delay getting the die to save more Victims for a higher-tier die. You need at least four Victims saved to unlock a die. The extra-Victim save bonus still applies afterwards, though a Final Girl with no save effect, like Julia, gets none.
