Do you take a card's Debt when you gain it, rather than buy it?
Several experienced players agree; no official ruling.

No. Debt is paid only when you buy a card. A card that is gained by another effect, such as Sunken Treasure or Lurker, does not cost its Debt. Banquet cannot gain a Debt-cost card at all, since 'up to 5 coins' means 0 Debt.
