What do the 3+ and 4+ marks and the rewards printed under Specimen spots on the tracks mean?

They apply when playing with fewer players. A spot marked for more players gets no Specimen token; you can still stop there and you move through it normally, but you gain the printed reward instead of researching. With 4 players every spot holds a Specimen, so the printed rewards never come up.
