Does the starting team have more words to find, and how do I tell who starts?
The rulebook states this directly.

Yes — the starting team has 9 words to find and the other team 8, and the starting team also gives the first clue. The four lights on the edge of the key card show which team starts. The extra word is the handicap for going first, not an extra turn.
