Can a clue use a homophone, such as knight for NIGHT?

The rulebook states this directly.

Not by default. Same-sounding words with different spellings are different words, so knight can't clue NIGHT-meaning things (and it's not a form of night). The Flexible Rules let a group allow it. Same-spelled homonyms are fine, and spelling out a clue is allowed.
