What are the factory symbols printed on the map for?
The designer answered this directly in 2017, and the rulebook text agrees.

They show where the Port bonus tiles go: one tile next to a factory at each corner, with the exact spot depending on whether you play with 1-2 or 3-4 players. Otherwise the factory art on the map has no effect on play.
