How does a tunnel with monster icons work, and can I take the damage on purpose?

Each monster icon deals 1 damage unless you spend a Sword on it. You can't take that damage if it would fill your Health Meter, nor if you have no cubes left in your supply. You still need the Boot(s) to enter the tunnel; Swords only prevent damage. Damage cubes come from your supply and go on your Health Meter from the left.
