The rulebook's Play Area entry says played cards are not included in a mid-turn reshuffle.

No. Cards you played this turn sit in your play area until the turn ends, so they are not in the discard pile when you reshuffle. Only your discard pile is shuffled (including cards you discarded or bought earlier this turn), and the new deck is used for the draw.
