If I take tunnel damage and gain a Sword later, can I cancel that damage?
The designer ruled that earlier damage stands.

No. Damage is paid as you cross, and a sword gained later in the turn (a Potion, a Secret, a played card) can't undo it. Play your cards and resolve effects before you spend Boots on monster tunnels.
