Can I spend Gold as Skill to buy a card?
The rulebook says Skill is what acquires cards, while Gold scores points and buys Market items.

No. Gold is worth a point each at game end and can be spent on things like Market items, but it is not Skill and cannot pay for Dungeon or Reserve cards. A Secret Tome or other card is bought with Skill.
