Is a card's text mandatory, or can I skip effects I do not like?
Several players agree; the designer's and publisher's rulings on playing all cards point the same way.

Mandatory unless the text says 'may'. You also get the card's Skill, Boots and Swords as resources, but you cannot ignore its printed effect (for example a Clank cost or a forced trash).
