Can I play a card or gain Swords later to cancel monster damage I already took this turn?
No. Damage already taken cannot be reversed, so a damage-preventing card or Swords must be in your pool when you pass the monster. You can, however, play your whole hand first and use cards or defeat monsters mid-move. Effects that count over the whole turn, like Lute, are the exception because they are worded that way.
