Can I trash a bad card from my play area before its effect happens?
Players agree and the rulebook's discard and trash wording supports it, but no official ruling.

No. Once a card is played its effects belong to your pool and must be completed; the only way to avoid them is to discard the card from your hand first. You also cannot trash from your hand directly, only from the play area or discard pile.
