Can I discard a card I haven't played yet, such as Stumble, to avoid its effects?
The rulebook's Discard rule says discarded cards have no normal effect and only unplayed hand cards can be discarded.

Yes — a card you discard from your hand is never played, so you get none of its effects, including Clank. Discard effects like Charlatan's only work on unplayed cards in your hand, and the discard must actually happen to get the reward. Once a card is in your play area its effects stand, so use the discard effect while the unwanted card is still in your hand.
