Must I assign hits to my own figures that another player controls?
The rulebook says a player who has legal targets must assign hits, including to figures under another's control.

Only if there is no other legal target. You may not assign hits to your own figures unless another player controls them, and then you must if nothing else is available. A controlled figure cannot hit itself.
