How does the Nian Monster's extra food cost work?

Every warrior die you send against it costs one extra Food, paid together with the journey Food before combat. For example, on a close shore (1 Food per 2 dice) you bring 1 Food per 2 dice plus 1 Food per die; on a far shore 2 Food per die.
